The Systems We Use
Your Workstation Each library staff member is assigned a staff workstation. Dell desktops are our standard. We currently use the following models: GX240, GX260, GX520 and 745. All the staff workstations are equipped with 17” monitors. Some departments also have shared workstations at service points, such as a circulation desk or the reference desk. You can use your Novell login account to access your files at any of these workstations. Novell NetWare ServerProvides basic file and print services. Each staff has his/her own account. Drive mapping: H: user’s home drive – a private space only the user and systems administrators can access. The files saved to this drive will be backed up every day. Users should avoid saving files to the local drive C: because if the workstation crashes, the user will lose all the files stored on C:\. G: group drive (department drive). This drive is for users to share files with colleagues in the same unit. It provides a convenience space for collaboration and sharing. F: library wide drive. F:\ drive’s structure reflects the library’s organizational structure. It is a place to find all kinds of library related information, staff activities, and documents on policies and guidelines. All staff members can read what’s on the F: drive , but the ability to make changes to files on F: drive is limited to designated staff members. Printing: Each user account is configured to print to at least one laser printer, usually one located near the user’s office location. Additional printers can be added to the configuration as needed. Desktop roaming: Your personal customization of the desktop is carried from staff workstation to staff workstation within the library. VoyagerVoyager is an integrated library management system, which is a large database of information used to manage the library’s materials. The Library also calls its online public catalog module SUMMIT. Some staff members will need to have access to staff modules of the Voyager system in order to perform their duties. Your department head and supervisor will decide your access needs and request them on your behalf. Accessing the Web OPAC (SUMMIT) does not need a login. The Voyager System includes the following modules: Cataloging, Acquisitions, Circulation, Reporting, and Administration. Web siteshttp://library.syr.edu is the library’s official web site. If a staff member has responsibility for updating the information on the official web site, a login account and password will be assigned. http://libweb.syr.edu is the staff web site. It contains a lot of useful information regarding Library policies and procedures, as well as postings on news of interest to library staff.
