Preparation
If you have any questions, or need assistance please contact your Technology Associate or LITS. To ease the migration, each staff person should do the following:
- Change your NetID password. Your Active Directory / Exchange password is set by changing your NetID. Visit https://selfserv.syr.edu/accounts/ to change your NetID.
- Import archived mail into GroupWise. If you have email outside the GroupWise system, or use the archive feature, the mail must be imported so it can be migrated to Exchange.
-
Save any attachments you want to keep that are on the list below to your H: drive. The following extensions are automatically stripped from email coming into Outlook:
*.ade
*.ads
*.bas
*.bat
*.cgi
*.chm
*.cmd
*.com
*.cpl
*.dll
*.eml
*.exe |
*.hlp
*.hta
*.inf
*.ins
*.isp
*.js
*.jse

*.msi

*.mst
*.pcd |
*.pif
*.pl
*.reg
*.scr
*.shs
*.vb
*.vbe

-
Delete any unnecessary email from your GroupWise account. Include all folders (Mailbox, Cabinet, Sent, Trash…) This is a good opportunity to “dust and clean” your email cabinet. The more data you have, the longer it will take to appear in Outlook during your migration.
- Sift through your personal GroupWise address book and eliminate addresses that you no longer use. Review the Frequent Contacts file in your GroupWise address book and move those you want to keep into your personal address book. Data in Frequent Contacts will not be moved to Outlook.
- Rules do not migrate to Outlook. Use SnagIt to document GroupWise rules that you are currently using. You can then recreate these rules using Outlook’s “Rules and Alerts ” utility.
- Proxy information will not migrated with "shared" email accounts. The owners of these accounts need to use SnagIt to document who has, what access to these accounts. The owners will be contacted by email soon. The screenshots need to be sent to lisd@syr.edu a few days prior to migration. While the "shared" account data will be transferred into Outlook, information about those who you allow to view or edit the data will not be transferred. LITS will set the permissions and for these accounts and configure access during migration.
- If you share your calendar, or any other GroupWise folder with someone else, you are responsible for documenting the access give to each person. The sharing configuration will not migrate. You will need this information to set this up in Outlook.
- GroupWise Address Book "Groups" may not migrate properly. Use SnagIt to document what groups you have, and the membership of each.
You will then use this information to double check membership after your migration.
